What these items share is that they are almost all board-based — built from engineered wood panels with applied finishes — and their quality is determined less by what you can see and more by what’s inside: the board grade, the edge treatment, the hinge brand, the drawer slide mechanism. A wardrobe that photographs well in a factory showroom can fail within two years in a humid climate if the substrate specification was wrong.

Most storage furniture exported from China is built from one of four core board types, often in combination. Understanding these before you write a specification is the most useful preparation a buyer can do.

Asking a supplier to confirm the board specification in writing — including the panel brand (Arauco, Kronospan, Sonae, or a named Chinese mill) — is a reasonable request and tells you immediately how seriously they approach their materials.

Finishes: What Goes on the Surface

The finish determines both the aesthetic and a significant part of durability. Four finishes account for the majority of what is exported from Foshan.

PVC foil wrap (also called membrane pressing) bonds a printed PVC film to an MDF substrate under heat and vacuum. It is the finish behind most wood-grain effects on mid-range furniture — durable, moisture-resistant, and capable of accurately replicating timber. Quality varies substantially by PVC thickness and adhesion process. Thin foil lifts at edges within two to three years in a hotel environment. Specifying 0.45mm minimum thickness and water-based adhesive is reasonable for hotel use.

Lacquer — whether PU, NC, or UV-cured — produces a smooth, paintable surface. UV lacquer, cured instantly by ultraviolet light, yields a very hard, scratch-resistant finish and is the preferred option for high-touch surfaces. Specify the number of coats (typically three to five for good coverage) and gloss level in numerical terms. “Matte” means different things to different factories — 20–30% sheen is a workable written spec.

Veneer gives the appearance of solid timber at a fraction of the cost. Rotary-cut veneer is cheaper and has a less distinct grain; sliced veneer (crown-cut or quarter-cut) looks closer to real timber and is appropriate for premium furniture. Specify the veneer species, cut method, and whether panel matching across door faces is required.

High-gloss acrylic panels (sometimes called crystal board or UV board) produce a mirror-like surface that photographs well and wipes clean easily. They chip at corners under impact and show fingerprints — suitable for display cabinets and vanity units, but not surfaces that are handled daily or subject to impact.

Hardware: Where Quality Becomes Visible After Delivery

In a factory showroom, every hinge works smoothly. After six months of daily use in a hotel room, you learn the difference between a Hettich or Blum fitting and an unbranded equivalent. Hardware is not the place to accept substitutions on a project order.

  • Wardrobe hanging rail — specify round or oval profile, wall thickness (≥0.8mm for durability), and bracket spacing. Confirm that end caps and wall brackets are included in the unit price.
  • Cam locks and connector bolts — for flat-pack furniture, the quality of cam lock fittings determines structural rigidity over time. Specify full-metal cams, not plastic.
For hotel projects spanning 50 or more rooms, hardware becomes a maintenance decision. Standardize on a brand with international distribution — Hettich, Blum, and DTC all qualify — so that replacement parts can be sourced locally by the property team in three years without calling you.

Construction: The Details That Matter

Storage furniture construction quality comes down to a handful of details that are easy to overlook in a showroom and very difficult to address after a container has arrived.

Back panels are often the first sign of cost-cutting. A quality wardrobe back panel is 9mm or thicker plywood, seated in a routed groove and glued in place. A cost-reduced back panel is 3mm HDF tacked on with staples — it bows, dents, and adds no structural rigidity. Specify back panel material and thickness in your purchase order, not just verbally.

Edge banding is the thin strip applied to the cut edges of board panels. Poor edge banding peels, chips, and traps moisture. Specify 2mm ABS edge banding on all visible edges — not 0.4mm or 1mm paper edge, which is common on budget pieces and fails at corners within a year. Ask specifically how curved corners are edge-banded; these are the first failure points.

Internal finishing matters for wardrobes that are opened daily. All interior faces should be melamine-faced or lacquered — not left as raw MDF or chipboard. Specify that interior surfaces are finished to the same standard as the exterior, even if the material differs.

Leveling feet on freestanding wardrobes should be adjustable threaded feet, not fixed timber blocks. Most installation floors are not perfectly level. What to Check Before Approving the Shipment

For any project order, a pre-shipment inspection on a sample of completed units is worth the cost. The following points consistently catch issues that factory QC misses or does not flag.

Assemble one complete unit fully. Open and close every door and drawer at least ten times. Test soft-close under a full load. Check that all hinges are at consistent height and that doors hang level — wardrobes that look fine when held shut often show misalignment when doors open to 90 degrees. If adjustment requires more than minor hinge movement, it signals a production tolerance problem across the batch.

Check corners and edge banding under raking light. Run a fingernail across every seam — edge banding at risk of peeling will show a hairline gap at the join. Packing and Shipping

Storage furniture ships either flat-pack or assembled. Flat-pack is almost always preferable for export: lower cubic volume, lower freight cost, and significantly lower transit damage risk. A well-packed flat-pack wardrobe in foam-cornered export cartons typically arrives in better condition than the same piece shipped assembled in blanket wrap.

Confirm with your factory whether any components contain solid wood — sawn timber, finger-jointed wood, or timber-content engineered panels may require heat treatment to ISPM-15 standard depending on destination.
