China produces the majority of the world’s manufactured mirrors, with major production clusters in Foshan, Wuxi, and Zibo. For hotel developers, villa builders, and importing businesses, finding a supplier is straightforward. Writing a specification that actually produces the right product is not. Glass thickness, silvering chemistry, edge treatment, IP rating for wet areas, and frame composition vary significantly between factories, and the default product at the sample price is rarely what a well-specified project requires. This guide covers what experienced buyers put in writing before the first quote.

SIX MIRROR CATEGORIES AND THEIR PRIMARY SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Glass quality: the foundation of every mirror spec

Most mirrors leaving Chinese factories use float glass — produced by floating molten glass over a bath of liquid tin, yielding a flat, uniform sheet with consistent thickness. The quality of that raw glass determines how sharp and accurate the reflection will be, and varies considerably across price tiers.

When specifying glass for project use, ask your supplier to confirm that the glass meets GB 11614, China’s national flat glass standard. Within that standard, Class A has the tightest tolerances on optical distortion, warpage, and surface defects. Class B is acceptable for most residential applications. Class C is suitable for framed decorative use where optical accuracy is secondary. Factories typically stock all three but will default to the middle grade unless you specify otherwise.

Standard float vs. low-iron glass

Standard float glass carries a faint green tint caused by iron oxide in the raw material. In small mirrors — a 400 × 600mm bathroom vanity mirror, for example — this is imperceptible in use. In a 1,200 × 800mm frameless panel, a full-height wardrobe mirror, or a lobby installation with multiple mirror tiles, the green tint becomes clearly visible, particularly at the edges and when viewed at an angle against white walls or light fittings.

Low-iron glass (also marketed as ultra-clear or extra-clear) reduces the iron oxide content to near zero, eliminating the green cast. The reflection reads as neutral white and renders skin tones and room colours accurately. Specify low-iron glass for any mirror panel larger than approximately 1,000mm in either dimension, for hotel rooms where colour rendition matters, or wherever the mirror will be adjacent to white marble, white joinery, or precision-matched finishes. For standard residential furniture or contract-grade fitout, standard float is appropriate and cost-effective.

Glass thickness by application

Thickness affects rigidity, weight, and resistance to chipping during transit and installation. Three-millimetre glass is common in consumer retail mirrors but is not appropriate for project specification — it flexes visibly if not fully supported and chips easily at cut edges. Four millimetres is the correct project minimum for bathroom mirrors up to around 800mm wide. Five millimetres is standard for full-length mirrors, larger bathroom panels, and any mirror that will be lean-mounted or bracket-fixed without continuous wall contact. Six millimetres or more should be specified for lobby or statement feature mirrors, oversized panels, and any application where the mirror may be handled or stored without protective packaging during a fitout programme.

Silvering: always specify copper-free

The reflective surface of a mirror is produced by depositing a thin layer of silver onto the back of the glass, then applying a protective coating over the silver. In the traditional process, a copper layer is applied over the silver as an additional barrier before the backing paint. In copper-free silvering — sometimes called lead-free or eco-silver — the copper layer is eliminated, and the silver is protected instead by more advanced backing compounds that provide superior moisture resistance without the copper intermediate.

The practical reason to specify copper-free is humidity performance. In bathroom installations, the edge of a copper-backed mirror will eventually turn black as moisture penetrates behind the backing paint and oxidises the copper layer. This edge blackening can begin within two to three years in a poorly ventilated bathroom and is extremely difficult to reverse once it appears. Copper-free silvering resists this process significantly better. For any hotel project, bathroom mirror, or installation in a humid climate, copper-free silvering should be a non-negotiable specification.

There is also a compliance dimension. The EU REACH regulation restricts certain hazardous substances, and copper-free mirrors are unambiguously cleaner to import and certify across most markets. Most competent suppliers in Foshan and Wuxi now default to copper-free for export orders, but confirm it in writing on the purchase order.

The edge test for silvering quality. When evaluating a sample, examine the perimeter of the mirror with a strong light at an oblique angle. A copper-free mirror with proper waterproof backing should show no discolouration, no micro-bubbles under the backing, and no black spots at the cut edges. Reject any sample that shows edge defects on delivery — this is the area that will fail first in service.

Edge treatments: specify the profile and finish

How the perimeter of the glass is finished affects both safety and appearance. For framed mirrors, where the frame completely covers the edge, a seamed edge — lightly ground to remove sharpness — is standard and adequate. For frameless mirrors and any application where the glass edge will be visible or accessible, you need to specify the correct profile and finish.

When specifying a beveled edge, always confirm the bevel width. A 10mm bevel is subtle; a 20mm bevel is strongly decorative. Fifteen millimetres is the most common project specification for hotel and residential work. Confirm whether the bevel is cut on the front face only or on both faces — double-beveled edges are occasionally used on thick glass for luxury fitout.

LED mirrors: a longer specification checklist

LED-backlit and LED-fronted mirrors have become standard in hotel bathrooms and premium residential fitout. They require a more detailed specification than plain mirrors, because the electrical components add several critical parameters that must be confirmed before production begins.

Colour rendering index is the most important optical specification. A mirror used for grooming needs CRI 90 or higher to render skin tones and cosmetic colours accurately. Many factory-standard LED mirrors ship with CRI 80 strip lights, which is acceptable for ambient or decorative use but inadequate for vanity or hospitality applications. Specify CRI 90 or higher explicitly and ask for the LED data sheet to confirm it.

Colour temperature preference varies by project context. Warm white (2700–3000K) suits residential bedrooms and spa environments. Neutral white (4000K) works well for hotel bathrooms. Cool white (5500–6500K) is preferred for makeup and grooming in well-lit bathrooms. Many suppliers now offer 3-in-1 CCT mirrors with a touch switch to cycle between temperatures — a useful specification for hotel rooms where guests may differ in preference.

IP rating determines where the mirror can be legally and safely installed in a bathroom. The UK and EU follow IEC 60364-7-701 zone classifications. Zone 1 (directly above a bath or shower tray) requires IP65 minimum. Zone 2 (within 0.6m of Zone 1) requires IP44 minimum. Most bathroom vanity mirrors are installed outside Zone 1 and require IP44. Specify the IP rating in writing and ask the supplier to provide the actual test certificate from the certification body — not just a product label or photograph.

Anti-fog film and demister pads are different products. Anti-fog film is a hydrophilic coating applied to the mirror surface that prevents condensation forming. A demister pad is a low-wattage heating element bonded to the back of the glass that maintains the mirror surface above dewpoint. Demister pads are more effective in high-humidity environments but require a separate power supply connection and should be specified as a distinct line item. Confirm which product is included in the factory offering and, for demister pads, whether the element is integrated into the LED driver circuit or wired independently.

Frames and surrounds: specify the material through the supply chain

Frame material is frequently under-specified, resulting in frames that look correct in a factory photograph but fail within a year of installation. The four main frame materials used in Chinese mirror production are aluminium, solid wood, MDF, and resin.

Aluminium is the most durable and moisture-resistant option for frame construction. It will not warp, swell, or rust in a bathroom environment. Anodised aluminium frames are available in a wide range of finishes — brushed silver, matte black, champagne gold, and bronze are the most common for hotel applications. For any bathroom or high-humidity installation, aluminium is the correct structural choice.

Solid wood frames are appropriate for dry areas — bedroom or living room mirrors — where the warmth and grain of the material contribute visual quality. Specify the species, finish, and moisture treatment. Solid wood frames should not be used in bathrooms unless the factory can confirm sealed, waterproof construction and appropriate species selection.

MDF is widely used as a core material under veneer or paint finishes. The critical specification for any bathroom-adjacent frame is moisture-resistant MDF, referred to as MR or HMR grade. Standard MDF will swell and delaminate when exposed to sustained humidity — a failure mode that is extremely common in low-cost hotel mirrors and entirely avoidable by specifying the grade in writing at order stage.

Resin frames are used for ornate and decorative mirror styles with embossed or carved-look profiles that would be prohibitively expensive to produce in solid wood at volume. Resin is lighter than equivalent solid wood, takes paint and gilt finishes well, and does not split or crack. It is a legitimate and practical material choice for decorative lobby and feature mirrors — provided the backing hardware and hanging system are specified to be robust.

Safety backing and export packaging

Safety film is an adhesive laminate applied to the back of a mirror that holds glass fragments in place if the mirror is broken. It is required by many hotel chain specifications and increasingly specified in commercial interior contracts. Confirm whether safety film is included in the factory’s standard product or must be added as a separate line item. For any mirror exceeding 600mm in either dimension, safety film should be a default specification for commercial and hospitality supply.

Packaging is where mirror shipments most commonly fail in transit. Specify minimum packaging requirements in your purchase order: individual panels wrapped in protective paper or foam, foam or cardboard corner protectors, double-carton construction for units over 1,000mm, and a maximum stack height per pallet. If the order involves large or heavy mirrors, ask the factory to confirm the carton drop-test standard they observe. Standard export packaging from established Foshan suppliers is generally adequate for full-container ocean freight; risk increases with LCL consolidation and multi-port transhipment, where cartons are handled more frequently.
