The term “solid wood” is one of the most misused in furniture specifications. Understanding which species are genuinely available from China, what kiln drying actually means, and what your purchase order should say will prevent the most common and most expensive quality disputes in solid wood imports.
What “Solid Wood” Actually Means — and What It Doesn’t
In Chinese furniture manufacturing, “solid wood” (shímù) describes a range of constructions that are quite different from each other. Factories use the term loosely unless your specification constrains them. At one end, it means every component is solid timber throughout — no veneers, no engineered core. At the other end, it describes a piece where the visible frame is solid but drawer bottoms, back panels, and low-load shelves are HDF or MDF, which is entirely standard practice in well-made furniture and does not represent a shortcut.
Three distinct constructions get sold under the same label:
- Full solid wood — Every structural and visible component is cut from lumber. No engineered infill anywhere. More susceptible to seasonal movement than other constructions. Appropriate for traditional joinery and high-end pieces where natural wood character is part of the specification.
- Solid frame with engineered infill — Visible and load-bearing components are solid timber; internal panels such as drawer bottoms, back boards, and light shelves are HDF or MDF. This is the industry standard for most exported dining and bedroom furniture. Engineered panels are dimensionally more stable than solid wood in those applications — it is not a downgrade.
- Veneer over engineered core — MDF or plywood core with a thin real-wood veneer on visible faces. Legitimate product category, but should not be priced or represented as solid wood. It frequently appears on invoices as “solid wood” from factories that assume buyers are not checking.
If you need full solid wood, write it explicitly: “All external and structural components to be solid [species]. Internal panels such as drawer bottoms and back boards to be [solid / HDF — specify]. No MDF on any visible surface. No veneer or laminate surface treatment.” This level of specificity prevents the most common substitution dispute.
Main Species Available from Chinese Factories
Not every species sold as solid wood from China is grown there. China imports substantial volumes of timber from Southeast Asia, Africa, and North America, processes it locally, and sells the finished furniture internationally. What you can realistically order depends on the factory’s supply chain and your price point. The six species below account for the majority of solid wood furniture exported from Foshan and the surrounding region.

Rubber wood
The most widely used species in Chinese furniture manufacturing. Rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) is a plantation timber — harvested at the end of the tree’s latex-producing life — which makes it genuinely sustainable even without third-party certification. Light tan in color with a tight, even grain that takes stain and lacquer cleanly. Medium hardness, adequate for all normal furniture applications. Very affordable and available at scale from Foshan factories. The default species in budget-to-midrange dining and bedroom furniture, and a legitimate choice when understood upfront.
Ash
Light blonde to golden in color with an open, prominent grain and high flexibility relative to its hardness. Increasingly in demand for Scandinavian-style and natural-finish pieces. Chinese ash (Fraxinus mandschurica) is genuinely available and performs well; the grain character differs slightly from European ash but both are acceptable for most specifications. Available in clear grades with uniform color and minimal knots, and rustic grades with more natural character. Confirm the grade you want — factories may ship whatever they have unless the spec is explicit.
Oak
Dense, durable, warm amber tones, and the most recognizable grain pattern in residential furniture. Both white oak and red oak are processed in China; white oak is more common for export furniture, with a tighter grain and more consistent color. One practical note: confirm whether the oak is Chinese domestic timber or imported from North America or Europe. Both can be excellent — the grain pattern and cut differ, but quality can be high either way. American white oak processed in Chinese factories is generally competitive. Ask the factory specifically what stock they are using.
Acacia
Rich dark honey tones, very hard, and visually distinctive due to natural color and grain variation from piece to piece. Popular for live-edge dining tables and solid slab applications. Acacia grows fast and is available in wide boards, which makes it practical for large tabletops without finger-jointing. The natural variation is a selling point for residential buyers but a specification challenge for hospitality projects requiring visual consistency across multiple tables in the same room. If you are buying for a hotel or commercial space, specify whether variation is acceptable and what the tolerance range is — otherwise you may receive pieces that are visually inconsistent with each other.
Poplar
Light creamy color, soft, and inexpensive. Frequently used as a secondary wood — drawer sides, internal frames, structural elements that will not be seen. Occasionally used for painted furniture where the surface is fully covered. Not appropriate for tabletops or load-bearing horizontal surfaces. The main risk is substitution: a factory may use poplar for visible components they claimed would be a more expensive species, knowing an opaque paint finish will hide the grain. Prevent this by requiring species verification during pre-shipment QC, and specifying that any secondary wood substitution must be disclosed and approved before production begins.
Beech
Pale tan to pinkish-tan, fine and even grain, very hard. Used primarily for chair frames, bench seats, and bentwood components. Beech steam-bends exceptionally well — it is the traditional material for Windsor chair backs and curved components in European furniture. If you are sourcing curved chair backs or bentwood elements, ask the factory whether they steam-bend or use laminated construction for those curves. Steam-bent beech is stronger and more durable; laminated construction is faster but can delaminate if the adhesive bond is inadequate.

Kiln Drying and Moisture Content
Moisture content is the single most important quality variable in solid wood furniture, and it is where most import quality failures originate. Wood expands and contracts as ambient humidity changes. Furniture made from insufficiently dried timber will gap, warp, crack at joints, or develop surface checking within months of arriving in a different climate. This is the most common and most preventable quality complaint for solid wood furniture from China.
Chinese factories describe their timber as kiln-dried, but drying standards vary enormously. A factory selling primarily to domestic or Southeast Asian buyers may target 14–16% moisture content — adequate for humid tropical environments but completely wrong for Australian, European, North American, or Gulf interiors where ambient humidity can fall to 30–40% or lower in heated or air-conditioned spaces. Wood equilibrates to the humidity of its environment. If it arrives at 14% moisture content and the installation climate averages 40% relative humidity, the wood will lose moisture and shrink — causing gaps, cracking, and loosened joints.
Target moisture content by destination:
- Gulf / Middle East / UAE: 6–8% (very dry, heavily air-conditioned interiors)
- Northern Europe, UK, Canada, northern US: 7–9%
- Southern US, Australia: 9–11% (varies by region and season)
- Tropical destinations — Southeast Asia, coastal Africa: 12–14%
Specify moisture content explicitly in your purchase order: “Kiln-dried to [X]% moisture content, tolerance ±1%. Factory to provide moisture meter readings at point of packaging. QC inspector to verify with calibrated pin moisture meter, minimum 10% of pieces sampled.” A pin moisture meter is inexpensive, and this verification should be a standard line in any pre-shipment inspection brief for solid wood furniture.
Construction and Joinery
How a solid wood piece is assembled matters as much as the species. Solid wood moves seasonally; a well-designed joint accommodates that movement without failing. Joints that are too rigid or that rely entirely on adhesive without mechanical interlock will loosen or crack as the wood cycles through humidity changes.
Mortise and tenon
The traditional joint for structural connections in case goods and chairs. A tenon cut on one component fits precisely into a mortise in another. When made to correct tolerances and glued with a proper wood adhesive, this joint does not fail under normal furniture use. Specify mortise-and-tenon for chair frames, table aprons, and structural joints in any solid wood case good. Factories that use only dowels or cam locks in place of mortise-and-tenon are cutting production time — acceptable in MDF furniture but a specification downgrade for solid wood.
Dowels
Wood or metal dowels are faster to produce and adequate for some applications — panel alignment, light joints, and secondary structure. Not adequate as the sole joint for chairs, heavily loaded shelving, or table legs. The failure mode for an adhesive-only dowel joint is gradual loosening as the wood cycles through seasonal moisture changes. Mortise-and-tenon provides more glue surface area and a mechanical interlock that resists this movement.
Cam locks and knock-down fittings
Appropriate for flat-pack furniture intended for repeated disassembly. Not appropriate for solid wood furniture sold as permanently assembled. If a factory proposes cam locks for a solid wood bed frame or dining table, this is a specification downgrade. Cam locks introduce metal-to-wood friction at the joint, and that interface loosens with humidity cycling in a way that glued timber joints do not. If you need knock-down construction for shipping reasons, that is a legitimate discussion — but it should be a deliberate decision, not a default.
Finishes for Solid Wood
The finish determines the practical performance of the piece — its resistance to heat, moisture, and daily use — as well as the regulatory compliance position in markets with VOC restrictions. The main options available from Foshan factories are NC lacquer, PU lacquer, water-based lacquer, hardwax oil, and wax.

NC lacquer is the most common factory default and is entirely appropriate for bedroom and living room furniture that does not see food and drink traffic. For dining tables, PU lacquer or hardwax oil is the correct choice — NC lacquer is not heat-resistant and will cloud or lift around hot plates and cups over time. If a factory proposes NC lacquer for a dining table, ask whether they have tested it for heat and moisture resistance. Most have not.
For export to the EU, UK, and Australia, VOC content in solvent-based lacquers is regulated. If this matters for your market, request written confirmation that the factory’s lacquer supplier can document compliance with the relevant VOC directive. Water-based finishes avoid the issue entirely and are increasingly available in Foshan without significant quality compromise. The satin and matte results in water-based PU from better local factories are competitive with solvent-based finishes.
What to Include in Your Specification
SOLID WOOD PRODUCTION STAGES — QUALITY IS DETERMINED AT EACH STEP, NOT JUST AT FINAL INSPECTION
- Species and origin — Name precisely. “Solid white oak, North American or Chinese domestic origin acceptable” is a specification. “Solid oak” is not.
- Construction definition — State which components must be solid and which may be engineered. “All external panels and structural frames solid [species]. Drawer bottoms and back boards HDF minimum 5mm. No MDF on any visible surface.”
- Grain grade — Clear grade (minimal knots, uniform color) or rustic grade (natural variation accepted). This affects both price and visual result — specify which you need.
- Moisture content — Target percentage and tolerance at point of packaging. Require calibrated moisture meter readings in the QC inspection report.
- Joinery type — Mortise-and-tenon for chairs and load-bearing structural joints. Dowels acceptable for panel alignment and light joints. No cam locks unless flat-pack is specifically required.
- Adhesive — E0 or E1 formaldehyde emission rating for any adhesives used. Required for EU, Australia, and most North American markets.
- Finish type and sheen level — Specify finish type, sheen (matte / satin / semi-gloss / gloss), and VOC documentation requirement if relevant to your destination market.
- Color standard — Provide a physical wood sample or RAL / Pantone reference for any stained finish. State the acceptable variation tolerance between pieces in the same order.
- Hardware — Specify metal type and finish for handles, hinges, and drawer runners. “Soft-close undermount runners, zinc alloy handles brushed brass finish” is a specification. “Good quality hardware” is not.
