Natural marble is irreplaceable in certain design briefs. Hotel lobbies, villa dining rooms, and prestige residential interiors specify it for a reason that sintered alternatives have not yet displaced. But sourcing marble furniture through a Chinese factory introduces variables that wood and metal orders do not carry — stone origin, slab lot consistency, structural thickness, joining quality, and crating specification all require explicit attention. This guide covers what to ask, what to verify, and where orders typically go wrong.

Natural Marble, Sintered Stone, or Engineered Quartz

Chinese suppliers use the word “marble” loosely. Before placing any order, establish which category you are dealing with. The maintenance implications, durability profile, and price vary significantly between them.

Natural marble is quarried calcium carbonate with mineral veining formed over millions of years. No two slabs are identical. It is porous, acid-sensitive, and requires sealing. It is also the material clients associate with luxury when they specify marble in a design brief.

Sintered stone — sold under brand names such as Dekton and Neolith, or generically as ultra-compact surface or porcelain slab — is manufactured at extreme heat and pressure. Engineered quartz (Silestone, Caesarstone, and many Chinese-manufactured equivalents) is resin-bound stone aggregate. More consistent than natural marble, less heat-resistant than sintered stone. Common in kitchen countertop applications; seen less in decorative furniture.

Where Chinese Factories Source Their Stone

Most furniture factories in Foshan do not quarry marble. They purchase slabs from stone trading yards or stone-processing workshops, then cut and fabricate for furniture. Understanding this supply chain changes your quality control approach.

Domestic marble comes primarily from Yunnan province — commonly marketed as China White or Cloud White — and from Guangxi province (Guangxi White), a widely used budget option on hospitality projects. Both are readily available with short lead times. Slab consistency within a batch is manageable if you specify that all units in a project draw from the same quarry lot number.

Imported stone — Turkish Afyon White, Greek Volakas, Spanish Crema Marfil, Italian Carrara, Calacatta, and Statuario — arrives in China as full slabs, which are then cut and fabricated locally. The furniture factory is contributing labor and processing, not the stone itself. On large hotel projects, a reputable supplier can provide the stone origin certificate and show you the slab stock. Thickness Standards

Stone thickness is quoted in millimetres. Specifying the wrong thickness for an application wastes material, creates structural risk, or adds unnecessary freight cost. The following are the options you will encounter in practice.

Chinese fabricators can produce most standard profiles, but you need to name them explicitly in your specification — leaving it to the factory’s discretion typically produces whatever is fastest to run on their CNC equipment.

Surface Finishes

The finish applied to natural marble changes both its appearance and its practical suitability for the end use. Factories default to polished unless you specify otherwise.

Polished marble has the mirror-like sheen most buyers associate with luxury stone furniture. It shows watermarks, acid etching, and fingerprints more readily than any other finish. Visually striking in lobbies and villa spaces where maintenance is managed and controlled.

Honed marble has a flat, matte surface with a quieter, more understated quality. Scratches and acid marks are far less visible than on polished stone. The practical specification for restaurant tables, bar tops, and any surface in regular daily use.

Brushed or leathered finishes amplify the stone’s natural texture — pits and grain are accentuated rather than smoothed. Fashionable in contemporary residential projects. Not all Chinese fabricators have the equipment for this finish; confirm capability before committing it to a specification.

Weight, Crating, and Shipping

Stone furniture is dense. A 20 mm polished marble dining top at 180 × 90 cm weighs approximately 90 kg before the base is added. Crated for export, the same piece typically runs 110–130 kg gross. This affects freight cost, container weight planning, and the crating specification your factory should be providing as standard.

Crating requirements for stone are more demanding than for upholstered or wood furniture. Stone corners chip under direct impact. Stone tops crack under uneven loading. Export-standard crating for marble furniture means a timber crate with foam or polyethylene padding on every face of the piece — not corner blocks and a standard export carton. If a factory proposes carton packaging for a marble table, treat this as a quality signal worth probing.

In a container, stone furniture occupies relatively little volume but reaches weight limits faster than most other furniture categories. On mixed-container shipments that include marble pieces, confirm the gross loaded weight with your freight forwarder before sealing. A 20-foot container’s practical gross weight ceiling is typically 20,000–21,000 kg, though this varies by port, carrier, and road weight limits at destination.

Always request the packed crate weight before booking freight. On stone furniture, the crated gross weight commonly runs 20–30% above the net stone weight alone. This affects both freight cost calculation and on-site handling requirements at destination. Include crated weight disclosure as a required field in your purchase order.

Common Problems to Anticipate

Slab substitution is the most frequent issue on marble furniture orders. A supplier quotes with one stone in mind and sources a cheaper alternative when production costs run high. Specifying the stone by exact name and requesting an origin certificate or supplier invoice before the balance payment is the most effective mitigation on any significant order.

Veining mismatch on joined tops is the second most commonly reported problem. Two slabs with strongly different vein directions on either side of a centre join look visually jarring. Require photo approval of the dry-laid slabs — before any cutting, edge profiling, or polishing — on any joined top longer than 120 cm. Once polished, the fix is a full remake at significant cost.

Sealing omission is routine on budget-tier orders. Factory workers skip the step under production pressure, and the first acid contact at destination — citrus, wine, or cleaning fluid — etches the polished surface permanently. Specify sealing in the PO and request a photo of the sealed, pre-packed top before shipment.

Edge chipping in transit is the most visible damage on arrival. Square stone edges are the most vulnerable point in the shipping process. An eased or micro-bevelled edge is measurably less prone to chipping than a pure square edge. If the design requires square edges, ask the factory specifically how they protect them during crating — the specificity of the answer will indicate how experienced they are with stone shipping.
