Most furniture materials fail gradually. A loose joint, a delaminating veneer, or a hardware failure gives you warning. Tempered glass — also called toughened glass — is heat-treated after cutting. The process compresses the surface and puts the interior under tension. The result is glass that is four to five times stronger than the equivalent annealed thickness, and critically, when it does break, it shatters into small blunt fragments rather than large sharp shards. This fracture pattern is what makes it appropriate for furniture applications where people are in close contact.
Tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or reworked after treatment. This means all edge finishing, hole drilling for cable management, and notching must happen before tempering. Suppliers who offer to drill post-temper are either cutting untempered glass or cutting into tempered glass in a way that will introduce stress cracks. Neither is acceptable.
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass bonds two or more panes with an interlayer — typically PVB (polyvinyl butyral) or SGP (SentryGlas). When broken, the interlayer holds the fragments in place. This is the glass used in car windshields and building facades. In furniture applications, laminated glass is used where fall-through risk is a concern — glass floors, balustrade panels, glass stair treads — and in some high-end coffee table applications where the “held together on break” characteristic is specifically valued.
Most furniture applications do not require laminated glass. Where they do, it is usually a building code requirement in the destination market and should be specified in writing with the applicable standard referenced.
Annealed Glass
Annealed glass is standard float glass — neither tempered nor laminated. It breaks into large sharp shards. It has no place in furniture applications where people interact with the surface. It is occasionally used for cabinet door inserts in low-traffic positions where breakage risk is minimal, but even there, tempered is a better choice. Any supplier quoting annealed glass for a dining table, coffee table, or shelving unit should be challenged on it immediately.

Safety Standards and What to Ask For
Most destination markets have a safety glazing standard that applies to furniture. The three you will encounter most often:
- EN 12150 (Europe, UK, Australia reference) — the European standard for thermally toughened soda lime glass. Specifies the fragment count that must result from a standardised break test. A legitimate supplier can provide a test report from an accredited lab.
- ANSI Z97.1 (United States) — defines safety glazing materials for architectural and furniture use. The standard requires that breakage result in dice-like pieces below a defined size. For US buyers, ask suppliers if their glass can be tested to ANSI Z97.1 and request prior test reports.
- AS/NZS 2208 (Australia / New Zealand) — the Australian standard for safety glazing, closely aligned with EN 12150 in its performance requirements. Relevant for the Australian villa market and hotel projects.
- GB 15763.2 (China domestic standard) — the Chinese national standard for tempered glass in building and furniture applications. Compliant product is not automatically compliant with EN or ANSI, but suppliers who can demonstrate GB 15763.2 compliance have a documented production process, which is a baseline check.
In practice, most Chinese furniture manufacturers cannot supply third-party test reports to EN 12150 or ANSI Z97.1 unless they export regularly to regulated markets. Standard float glass has a green tint caused by iron content in the silica. Frosted and sandblasted finishes are available from most Chinese suppliers. Quality varies. Ask for a sample of the frosted finish specifically — uneven sandblasting leaves patchy translucency and visible streaking. High-quality acid-etched frosting is more consistent but more expensive and less commonly available in furniture-scale quantities.
Tinted glass — grey, bronze, black — is produced in the float process and is available from most glazing suppliers. Smoked glass dining tables remain a consistent export product from Foshan. Quality checks apply: verify that the tint is consistent across the panel and that the tempering process has not introduced colour inconsistency at the edges.
What to Specify in Your Purchase Order
A purchase order for glass furniture should include more than dimensions and quantity. The following checklist covers the points most commonly omitted — and most commonly responsible for rejection on arrival.
- Glass type — specify “tempered” or “toughened.” Note if laminated is required and specify the interlayer type (PVB or SGP).
- Thickness — state the minimum acceptable thickness in millimetres. Do not accept substitutions without written approval.
- Maximum unsupported span — for shelves and long spans, include this alongside thickness. Forces the supplier to engineer for the actual use case.
- Glass clarity — “ultra-clear (low-iron)” or “standard clear.” If not specified, the supplier will default to standard.

Hardware and Base Connections
The glass-to-base interface is a common failure point that buyers overlook during sampling. A glass dining table top sitting on rubber pads on a metal or wood base behaves differently from one that is clip-mounted or adhesive-fixed. Both are valid, but they have different removal, replacement, and transit implications.

The standard for serious glass shipments is vertical crating — glass panels stood on edge and separated by foam or cardboard interleaving, then secured so they cannot shift. Flat stacking of glass panels in a container causes pressure loading from the stack above, which combined with vibration produces stress fractures that may not appear until the panels are moved at the destination.
For large table tops, individual wooden crates — not shared crates — are the correct specification.
