The finish is the first thing a buyer sees and the first thing that fails in service. Yet most purchase orders from China describe it in two words — “dark walnut” or “matte white” — leaving every technical decision to the factory. This guide covers the six surface finish systems used in Chinese furniture production, what to specify in each, and how to avoid the most common QC failures before a container is packed.
Why the Finish Is a Specification Decision, Not an Aesthetic One
When a furniture order arrives with brush marks in the lacquer, early yellowing, or delaminating edge banding, the most common cause is not a production accident — it is a specification gap. Surface finish determines long-term durability, VOC off-gassing, moisture and UV resistance, ease of repair after transit damage, and what contractual basis you have if something goes wrong.
A purchase order that specifies only “dark walnut PU lacquer” gives the factory discretion over the lacquer grade, the number of coats, the curing time, and the sanding protocol between coats. Each of those decisions affects what the piece looks and feels like after two years of use. In Chinese furniture factories, the finishing department is often the production bottleneck and the most common site of cost reduction when a supplier is squeezed on price. They are not doing anything wrong if your PO does not specify otherwise. The specification is your only protection.
SIX SURFACE FINISH SYSTEMS USED IN CHINESE FURNITURE PRODUCTION
PU Lacquer: The Default Finish and Its Limits
Polyurethane lacquer is the default surface treatment for the majority of wood and MDF furniture produced in Foshan and the surrounding Guangdong furniture cluster. It offers a controlled sheen range from matte to high gloss, good colour stability across a production run, and reasonable resistance to scratching and moisture once fully cured. It is also the finish type most likely to be applied inconsistently when a factory is under production pressure.
Coat Count and What Factories Skip
A well-specified mid-grade dining table should receive at minimum a sealer coat, two intermediate coats, and a topcoat — four coats with sanding between each. Budget production may apply two coats total: one sealer and one topcoat. The surfaces look identical at the point of delivery. The two-coat version begins to show wear at contact edges, drawer fronts, and frame joints within the first year of regular use.
Specify the minimum coat count explicitly in your purchase order — for example, “minimum 4 coats PU lacquer, sanded between coats.” Request a cross-section sample of the cured finish on a panel before production begins. Any reputable factory can provide one within a week. If they cannot, treat that as a significant yellow flag.
Sheen Level Specification
Matte and satin finishes (20–40 gloss units measured by a gloss meter) are the most practical choice for dining surfaces, hospitality furniture, and high-traffic case goods. They hide minor handling marks, substrate variation, and dust inclusions that occur during the finishing process. High gloss amplifies every surface defect and requires flawless substrate preparation — sanding to 320 grit or finer, void-free filler at all joints, and dust-free conditions during application. Most Foshan factories can achieve high gloss, but the reject rate and the cost of getting it right are higher.
Do not specify sheen level with descriptive terms alone. “Matte” means different things across factories and even across production runs within the same factory. Use a numeric range: “matte, 20–30 gloss units” or “satin, 35–45 gloss units.” If you have a reference panel from a previously approved order, send it — it removes ambiguity more effectively than any written description.
NC Lacquer, UV Coating, and Natural Oil Finishes
NC Lacquer: Where It Appears and Why to Reject It on Exposed Surfaces
Nitrocellulose lacquer dries faster than PU and costs less, which is why factories sometimes substitute it without disclosure when production timelines are tight. NC lacquer yellows under UV exposure over two to three years, is softer than PU, and adheres less reliably to the substrate after impact or temperature cycling. On interior surfaces — drawer interiors, back panels, the underside of shelves — NC lacquer is acceptable and widely expected at most price points. On any exterior-facing surface, it is a quality compromise that will become visible to end users.
Ask your supplier for the lacquer brand and product code. Reputable Foshan factories work with domestic brands such as Carpoly or Huarun, or with imported Japanese and Korean lacquers for higher-specification work. If a factory cannot tell you what lacquer they use, they are either substituting or do not have the production control to guarantee consistency.
UV Coating: Fast, Hard, and Geometry-Limited
UV-cured coating is standard for kitchen cabinet doors and flat-panel furniture produced at scale. The coating is applied by roller and cured in seconds by passing under high-intensity UV lamps on a conveyor line, which allows factories to process large volumes rapidly. The resulting surface is extremely hard — harder than cured PU — and scratch-resistant. It also has lower VOC emissions during application compared to solvent-based systems, which is relevant for buyers sourcing for markets with strict off-gassing standards.
Its limitation is geometry: UV lamps cannot reach curved profiles, undercuts, or three-dimensional carved surfaces. This finish is unavailable for shaped mouldings, turned legs, carved panel details, or any profile that breaks line of sight to the lamp. For flat-panel kitchen cabinetry and shelving systems, it is the preferred choice. For case goods with shaped edges or decorative profiles, PU lacquer remains the standard.
Natural Oil and Wax: The Maintenance Commitment
Oil and wax finishes penetrate the wood grain rather than forming a film over the surface. The result is a matte, tactile appearance that reads as natural timber — no plastic-like surface sheen, no build-up at the edges over time. This finish is standard on solid oak dining tables in the Northern European furniture aesthetic and is commonly produced in Foshan for export to Scandinavian and German markets.
The limitation for commercial or hospitality buyers is maintenance. An oiled surface requires a light recoating every six to twelve months to maintain its appearance and moisture protection. In hotel dining rooms or rental properties where maintenance cannot be guaranteed, this is a poor specification choice. For homeowner-direct sales with a clear written care guide, it is appropriate. Specify the oil brand — Rubio Monocoat, Osmo, or Treatex if you have a preference — as the quality of the oil affects both the initial appearance and the longevity between maintenance intervals.
Veneer vs. Foil Wrap: Understanding the Difference
Both veneer and foil wrap are applied to engineered wood substrates — MDF or plywood — to create the appearance of timber. They are not equivalent, and receiving one when you specified the other is one of the more common material substitutions in Chinese furniture production.
Wood veneer is a thin slice of real timber, typically 0.5 to 1mm thick, bonded to the substrate under heat and pressure. It retains the natural grain variation and colour depth of the parent species — every board is visually unique. After pressing, the veneer receives a lacquer topcoat, usually PU or UV. Veneer surfaces can be lightly sanded and refinished if damaged in transit or over time. They react to humidity as any natural material does: boards will raise or crack if the substrate is not sealed on all faces, or if moisture infiltrates from underneath during storage before installation.
Foil wrap is a printed PVC or PET film laminated to the substrate under heat and pressure. Modern high-definition printing on thick PET foil (0.18mm and above) can be difficult to distinguish from veneer at a viewing distance of one metre. The distinctions are tactile — foil does not have the temperature response or grain depth of real timber — and structural. The most common failure point is the edge: foil applied under insufficient pressure, or foil that is too thin, delaminates at corners and joins within one to two years under regular handling, particularly in humid climates. Unlike veneer, a delaminated foil edge cannot be repaired — the entire panel requires replacement.

How to Specify a Finish in Your Purchase Order
The following steps cover every decision that needs to be explicit before production starts. Leaving any of them to the factory’s discretion is an unwritten invitation to take the cheaper option.
- Name the finish system explicitly: PU lacquer, NC lacquer, UV coating, wood veneer plus lacquer topcoat, foil wrap, or oil and wax. “Lacquer” without qualification is insufficient and will be interpreted in the factory’s favour.
- For lacquer finishes, state the minimum coat count: “minimum 4 coats PU lacquer, including primer and topcoat, sanded between each coat.”
- State sheen level numerically: matte (20–30 gloss units), satin (35–45 GU), semi-gloss (55–65 GU), or high gloss (70+ GU). Descriptive terms alone are ambiguous.
- For veneer pieces, specify the timber species, cut direction (flat cut, quarter cut, or rotary cut), and minimum veneer thickness — 0.6mm for furniture applications.
- For foil-wrap pieces, specify PVC or PET and minimum film thickness. For case goods subject to daily handling, specify ≥0.18mm PET foil.
- State edge banding type, thickness, and bonding method: “1.5mm ABS edge banding, laser-bonded or hot-melt, matching the face colour.”
- Require a pre-production finish sample — a cured, finished panel in the specified system and colour — before the factory begins full production. Approve or reject it in writing.
- State the minimum curing and off-gassing period before packing: “Minimum 7 days after the final lacquer coat before packing into export cartons.”

What to Check During Finish QC
- Sheen consistency across the batch — check multiple pieces under both natural and artificial light. Variation between pieces in the same order is common when lacquer batches or mixing ratios differ mid-production.
- Edge banding adhesion — apply firm thumb pressure at all corners and joins. Any lift under light pressure is a rejection point before packing.
- Surface defects in the lacquer — look for runs, sags, brush marks, orange-peel texture, and dust inclusions. Hold panels at a low angle to raking light; defects that are invisible face-on become apparent at 20–30 degrees.
- Colour match against the approved reference panel — not against memory or a digital photo. The approved sample should travel with the inspection team and be compared directly to production pieces.
- Off-gassing — open a carton and assess for strong solvent odour. A significant smell after the stated curing period suggests undercured lacquer, which will continue to off-gas inside a sealed container.
- Substrate condition at joints — lacquer should not bridge gaps or conceal unfilled voids at mitre joints, corner blocks, or face-frame connections.
- Veneer or foil delamination — check all edges and corners of veneered or foil-wrapped panels for any lift before pieces are packed. Transit vibration will worsen any existing delamination.
The Batch Consistency Problem No Sample Can Solve
A pre-production sample is approved in week one of the order. Production runs in weeks four through six, often using a different batch of lacquer from a different drum. Lacquer batches vary in colour — particularly for stained and tinted finishes — and in sheen level. The variation can be subtle enough to miss on a single piece and obvious when three pieces are placed side by side in a room. This is the most common finish complaint that arrives after a hotel project is installed or a full-house order is unpacked.
For large orders — hotel FF&E, villa full-house furnishing, or multi-unit residential — specify in the purchase order that all pieces are finished in one continuous production run using the same lacquer batch, and that the batch number and finish product code are recorded on the packing list. For orders where finish consistency is critical, a mid-production QC visit or a third-party inspection report prior to packing is the only reliable way to catch batch variation before it ships.
