First-time buyers often ask which city to base their trip around. The honest answer is: it depends on what you’re buying. Here’s how the two cities actually compare — and why most serious furniture buyers end up in Foshan.
When buyers start researching a China furniture sourcing trip, they often land on Guangzhou first — it’s the bigger, more internationally visible city, it hosts the famous Canton Fair, and it has better direct flight connections from many countries. Foshan, 30 kilometres to the southwest, is less well-known outside the industry.
But ask any experienced furniture buyer which city they actually spend their time in, and the answer is almost always Foshan. Here’s why — and what Guangzhou is actually good for.
“Guangzhou is where you fly into. Foshan is where the furniture is.”
— Sorse Sourcing TeamWhat Guangzhou is actually good for
Guangzhou is one of China’s largest and most commercially sophisticated cities. It’s a genuine trade hub and serves international buyers well in several specific contexts:
- The Canton Fair — held twice yearly (April and October), the Canton Fair is one of the world’s largest trade fairs covering virtually every product category. If you’re a general importer sourcing across many categories, the Canton Fair is worth building a trip around
- Broad product sourcing — textiles, electronics, hardware, packaging, consumer goods. Guangzhou is a better base if furniture is only one of several categories you’re sourcing
- International connectivity — Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has more direct international routes than Foshan’s smaller airport, making it the practical entry point for most buyers
- Larger-scale trading companies — some consolidated trading operations that source across multiple factories operate out of Guangzhou
- Accommodation and amenities — more hotel options at every price point, better international restaurant and business travel infrastructure
Why Foshan is the right base for furniture buyers
Foshan — specifically its Shunde district, and the towns of Lecong and Longjiang — is the geographic centre of China’s furniture manufacturing industry. No other location in China (or the world) concentrates this much furniture production and distribution in one place:
- Home to 3,000+ furniture factories within a compact geographic area
- The Lecong and Longhua markets are among the world’s largest furniture trading centres
- The entire supply chain — timber, foam, leather, hardware, lacquer — is within a 20km radius
- Factories here have decades of export experience and understand international buyer requirements
- Faster sampling and production turnarounds because everything is local
- More competitive pricing due to supply chain density and factory competition
- No direct international flights — most buyers fly into Guangzhou and travel to Foshan
- Fewer international hotel options at the top end (though this is improving)
- Less relevant if you’re sourcing non-furniture categories
- Can be overwhelming without local guidance — the scale is genuinely large
The direct comparison: Foshan vs. Guangzhou for furniture
| Factor | Foshan | Guangzhou |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture factories & showrooms | World-leading concentration | Some, but far fewer |
| Price competitiveness | Lower — closer to production | Higher — trading markups common |
| Factory access & customisation | Direct factory access | Often via trading companies |
| International flights | No direct routes | Major international hub |
| Hotel options | Good but fewer top-end choices | Extensive range |
| Canton Fair access | 45 min from Guangzhou venue | On your doorstep |
| Broad product sourcing (non-furniture) | Limited | Excellent |
| Best for furniture-focused buyers | Yes — clearly the right base | No — commuting adds up |
The practical answer: how most buyers structure it
The most efficient approach for a furniture-focused buyer is straightforward: fly into Guangzhou, transfer to Foshan on day one, and base yourself there for the duration of your sourcing trip. If you want to attend the Canton Fair or source non-furniture categories, add a day or two in Guangzhou at the start or end of your trip.
Travel tip: The journey from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport to central Foshan takes approximately 45–60 minutes by car or Didi. The intercity metro (Guangfo Line) also connects the cities and is useful if you want to make day trips between them during your stay. We advise most clients to stay in Foshan for any trip where furniture is the primary purpose — the time saved on daily commuting is real.
What about other furniture sourcing cities in China?
Foshan isn’t the only furniture manufacturing hub in China, though it’s the largest and most relevant for the types of pieces most international buyers want. A few others worth knowing:
Dongguan — strong in office furniture and some residential categories. About 90 minutes from Foshan. Worth a visit if office or hospitality casegoods are a major part of your brief.
Shenzhen — increasingly a design-forward manufacturing hub. Better for contemporary, design-conscious furniture and some higher-end custom production. About 2 hours from Foshan.
Anji (Zhejiang province) — the dominant hub for office chairs globally. If ergonomic seating is your primary category, Anji is worth the separate trip. It’s not near Foshan.
For most buyers sourcing residential or hospitality furniture, Foshan covers the majority of what they need without requiring multi-city travel.
